PM Starmer: UK must move closer to EU amid global instability
Britain needs to strengthen cooperation with the European Union against the backdrop of growing global instability, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.
Speaking in an interview with BBC on May 2, the prime minister stated that Britain needs to be reshaped into a stronger and fairer country.
“What I mean by that is a country that with can withstand these shocks, these global events. And that means strengthening our economy. Of course, that means investment, technology, getting rid of all the barriers to the economy, but it means me being much closer to the EU,” he said.
Starmer noted that the world is entering a period of major upheaval, including tensions involving Iran and the ongoing situation in Ukraine, which are affecting the UK economy. He stressed that London does not intend to take part in a war with Iran, saying it would not serve the country’s national interests.
The prime minister also emphasized the need to reinforce alliances and improve national resilience through investment and technological development. He added that Europe is currently not strong enough and that maintaining the status quo is no longer viable amid rising global tensions.
