Poland calls on NATO to accelerate defence spending increase

06 May 2026 14:37

Poland has called on NATO member states to accelerate plans to raise defence spending to 5% of GDP within five years.

Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, said the target should be achieved earlier than planned, Caliber.Az reports, citing Polish media.

During the Defence 24 Days conference in Warsaw, he warned against delays in the Alliance’s rearmament efforts.

“Europe is capable of developing its economic potential on an incredible scale, but we must clearly understand that this is the priority today,” he noted.

The minister made it clear that waiting until 2035 to reach the 5% GDP target was unacceptable, arguing that the goal should be achieved by 2030 “because later it may be too late.”

Poland, which in 2025 once again became the NATO leader in defence spending as a share of GDP, continues to expand its military budget amid heightened security concerns in Europe.
