Poland plans to double army size

Poland's government said the country's army is rebuilding units and creating new ones to nearly double its strength.

Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski made the statement during a visit to the town of Kodien in Lublin province, near the border with Belarus, Polskie Radio reports.

According to him, the Polish army, which previously consisted of three divisions, will now have six. An additional division may appear later.

"One of the main tasks, perhaps even the main task of the state ... is the defence of security. Security in all dimensions," Kaczynski said.

He added that the authorities are working to strengthen the border with Belarus, in particular, building fences and installing "all kinds of electronic devices" to protect the border.
