Poland's military modernization: K2 Black Panthers outpace upgraded T-72 tanks
Poland is rapidly modernizing its military, beginning with the introduction of advanced K2 Black Panther tanks, which have recently undergone rigorous testing and live-fire exercises.
These tanks are proving to be far superior to the aging T-72 tanks, which, despite extensive upgrades, remain outdated compared to the cutting-edge features of the K2, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
The K2 tanks' advanced fire control systems, autoloaders, and versatile suspension system are among the features that have earned high praise from Polish crews, who are transitioning from older platforms like the PT-91, an improved version of the T-72.
The acquisition of the K2 tanks is part of a broader modernization effort that includes a $3.4 billion agreement for 180 tanks, with Poland set to receive 96 additional units in 2025. The Polish Army's shift towards South Korean-made equipment is rapidly reshaping the nation's defence capabilities, allowing it to maintain a technological edge over its adversaries.
Furthermore, Poland is enhancing its armored forces with other South Korean systems, such as the K9 self-propelled howitzers and Chunmoo rocket artillery, alongside US-made M1 Abrams tanks and HIMARS rocket systems.
The decision to modernize came in response to both regional security concerns and Poland’s strategic alignment with NATO, particularly during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. As Poland sends some of its older T-72s to Ukraine, it accelerates its transition to more advanced and NATO-compatible systems, solidifying its position as a leader in European defence.
