Poland says new US military base could cost $3.2 billion
Building a permanent U.S. military base in Poland could cost about 12 billion zlotys ($3.2 billion), Polish news portal Wirtualna Polska reported on Tuesday (June 23), citing government sources.
The report said the facility would likely be constructed either near Poznań or close to Wrocław, with the locations selected because of their large airfields and strategic infrastructure, Caliber.Az reports, citing Polish media.
According to Wirtualna Polska, the proposed base would accommodate not only U.S. troops but also their families, requiring housing, schools, healthcare facilities and other services for an estimated 25,000 people. The number of American military personnel stationed at the base would range from 11,000 to 15,000.
Poland currently hosts around 10,000 U.S. troops, most of them deployed on a rotational basis as part of NATO's efforts to strengthen security along the alliance's eastern flank.
The proposal follows a meeting on June 3 between Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, during which Warsaw formally presented plans for a new permanent U.S. military installation on Polish territory.
