Poland says Russian missile likely landed on its territory UPDATED / VIDEO

30 July 2026 16:00

Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, said early indications suggest a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile fell overnight in the country’s Lublin region during a large-scale attack on Ukraine.

Tusk said the missile landed in the village of Tarnowa-Kolonia amid a wave of Russian strikes on Ukraine. No casualties or damage have been reported.

The incident occurred as Russia carried out a mass missile assault on Ukraine. Tusk said that during a meeting in Lublin on Wednesday, July 29, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned him of a planned large-scale Russian air attack.

He added that Poland and Ukraine would continue to expand cooperation on advanced missile defence technologies, regardless of existing tensions.

Tusk also said Poland had received a request from Ukraine to assist in identifying the object that crashed on its territory. Around 100 personnel, including military and police officers, are currently working at the site, where investigative procedures are ongoing. Authorities are considering Kyiv’s request, and Ukrainian investigators may be allowed to join the probe.

Tusk said he was travelling to the scene of the incident.

Poland is investigating an unidentified object that entered its airspace and later crashed, after what Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz described as an “extremely difficult” night for the country’s air defence systems.

“It was an extremely difficult night for our air defence, surveillance and threat detection systems,” Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote on social media platform X.

He said information had been continuously transmitted and coordinated among relevant services and “also reached the most important people in our country.” Authorities are now working to determine the nature of the object that fell near the town of Tarnawa-Kolonia.

According to the military, the object was detected in Polish airspace on July 30, prompting the deployment of a duty F-16 fighter jet to identify and intercept it. However, the object disappeared from radar six minutes after detection.

Police later reported a powerful explosion and the discovery of a crater in the Lublin Voivodeship in eastern Poland, approximately 2 kilometres from the nearest residential area. Debris from an unidentified object was found scattered near the site.

Regional fire service spokesperson Tomasz Stachyra said the crater measured about 10 meters in diameter.

An air raid alert was reported overnight in the Polish city of Lublin, according to local residents.

Poland’s Armed Forces said they had preemptively scrambled military aircraft in response to a Russian attack on neighbouring Ukraine.

Ukrainian monitoring channels reported during the night that missiles launched from Russia had entered Polish airspace, but there has been no official confirmation of those claims.
