Poland warns moving Russian embassy would break diplomatic ties

06 August 2026 15:11

Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski warned that relocating the Russian embassy in Warsaw, as proposed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, would effectively lead to a break in diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“If colleagues from PiS want to relocate the [Russian] embassy, then they should openly say that they want a break in diplomatic relations; without this it is impossible to implement their proposed [Sejm] resolution,” Sikorski said in an interview with Polskie Radio. “If that is what they want, they should say it openly, because so far no EU or NATO country has broken relations with Russia,” he added.

The proposal stems from a resolution adopted by Poland’s lower house of parliament, the Sejm, on November 21, 2025. The measure, put forward by PiS, calls on the government to consider steps, in line with international law, to relocate the Russian embassy building in Warsaw.

Supporters of the initiative argue that the move is necessary due to the embassy’s proximity to Poland’s Ministry of Defence. However, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maciej Wiewiór has described the resolution as non-binding.

The Russian embassy complex, located on Belwederska Street in Warsaw, is the property of the Russian Federation and lies close to the Polish defence ministry.
