Police use water cannon against protesters in India’s Jharkhand VIDEO

Police used batons and water cannon to disperse protesters in Ranchi, the capital of India’s eastern Jharkhand state, on August 10 as demonstrators rallied over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations.

The protesters, who included candidates who appeared for examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), attempted to march towards the state legislative assembly, breaking through several police barricades, Caliber.Az reports via Indian media.

The demonstrators are demanding the cancellation of a JSSC examination and an investigation into alleged irregularities. Some have also called for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the matter.

Protest leader and activist Devendra Nath Mahto has been on hunger strike for nine days. He was brought to the protest site in an ambulance and later joined the demonstrators on a stretcher.

Jharkhand authorities said they were prepared to investigate the alleged irregularities in the examinations.
