Polish PM, president to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine on January 9
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is expected to meet President Karol Nawrocki on January 9 to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine following the recent ceasefire, as well as ongoing disputes over ambassadorial appointments.
Marcin Bosacki, Deputy Foreign Minister and member of the Civic Coalition, said on Polish media that he hoped the meeting would end what he described as a “five-month policy of sabotaging government actions” by the president, particularly in matters of foreign policy and national security.
Bosacki criticised Nawrocki for avoiding contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and for failing to respond to a written compromise proposed by Foreign Minister Sikorski regarding ambassadorial nominations, including candidates Bogdan Klich and Ryszard Schnepf. “We hope these obstructive actions will come to an end,” he added.
Bosacki also rejected claims that some diplomatic posts were a “presidential priority,” emphasising that, under the constitution, the government is responsible for foreign policy, while the president represents Poland in certain formats, such as NATO councils.
He suggested that Tusk would likely present a significant compromise proposal during the talks to resolve the standoff, stressing the need for constructive dialogue on issues crucial to Poland’s security and international relations.
