Polish tourist bus overturns in Hungary, leaving 12 dead PHOTO

Twelve people were killed and dozens injured after a Polish tourist bus veered off a Hungarian motorway and overturned in a ditch, BBC reports.

The bus crashed after leaving the M3 motorway, which links the Hungarian capital Budapest with the northeastern city of Nyíregyháza, police said.

Authorities believe the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He was taken into custody following the crash.

State media reported that firefighters had so far rescued 35 of the 57 passengers and two drivers on board.

Hungary’s ambulance service said it had treated one person for life-threatening injuries, nine others for serious injuries and another 37 for minor injuries.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar expressed his “sincere condolences” to the victims’ families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
