POLITICO: EU and US fail to reach agreement in tariff talks
Talks in Paris on May 5 lasting more than an hour between EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and his US counterpart Jamieson Greer on US tariffs on European cars have failed, POLITICO reports, citing diplomatic sources.
Šefčovič called for a “swift return” to previously agreed terms, but Greer refused to remove from the agenda the threat by US President Donald Trump to impose 25% tariffs on imports of European vehicles.
The European Union is still hoping to shift the outcome in its favour in the upcoming negotiations. A European diplomat told Politico that the fastest way to neutralise Trump is to strike a deal.
Left-wing groups in the European Parliament oppose a “quick” agreement, arguing that the US president’s statements indicate he is an unreliable trade partner.
