Politico: EU countries urge faster creation of migrant centres in third countries
More than half of the 27 EU member states have signed a letter calling for the rapid establishment of migrant reception centres in third countries for asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected, Politico reports.
According to the publication, the initiative was prepared by the governments of Denmark and Italy and has been signed by at least 15 countries.
“Together, we have redefined the European conversation about migration,” the letter reads. “Now we need to show concrete results that make a real difference for our citizens with solutions based in third countries as soon as possible.”
The letter further notes that countries are currently working “to implement the new possibilities, including hubs in third countries,” adding that signatories intend to personally lead the process to ensure the proposal is put into practice.
