Media: EU diplomatic service chief set to resign after leadership shake-up
The Secretary-General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), Belén Martínez Carbonell, is expected to leave her post following a redistribution of powers initiated by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
The timing of her departure has not yet been determined. She is expected to potentially receive a new assignment in Latin America, POLITICO reports, citing diplomatic sources.
Carbonell took up the position in February 2025, replacing Italy’s Stefano Sannino, who is under investigation for alleged misuse of EU funds.
Politico noted that the restructuring is part of reforms introduced by Kallas. A new senior management role has been created, taking over some of Carbonell’s responsibilities, including coordination with the diplomatic corps.
