Politico: Europe no longer counts on US
European countries can no longer count on the United States and NATO for security in case of possible conflicts, and the European Union (EU) will need decades and billions of euros to improve its own defence capabilities.
This is the conclusion reached by Politico journalists after Donald Trump's words criticizing the North Atlantic Alliance.
“The bottom line is that it’s become risky to count on America. Considering what’s at stake — subjugation to Russia — Europe has no choice but to start preparing a Plan B,” the text reads.
At the same time, it is noted that the EU leaders continue to remain in the "anger-cum-denial stage".
As follows from the text, the coming to power in the U.S. Joe Biden returned to Europe a sense of security, which in the end turned out to be false. It has allowed European leaders to postpone questions about creating autonomy from NATO.
" The truth is, Europe only has itself to blame for the morass," Politico writes.
Before that, European Commission spokeswoman Arianna Podesta said the EC was working to prepare for all sorts of outcomes in the US presidential election.
"We are setting up a structure that will deal with preparations for all possible outcomes of the elections in the United States," Podesta commented on former US President Donald Trump's statements about NATO.
