Politico: Kyiv’s allies seek to manage tensions with Trump

16 June 2026 11:53

Kyiv’s European allies are working to avoid a confrontation with U.S. President Donald Trump at the G7 summit, as Washington shifts focus back to the Russia–Ukraine war following the recent Iran crisis.

Diplomatic concerns have grown among European officials that Trump, now less preoccupied with developments in Iran, could attempt to take a more direct role in Ukraine peace efforts and reshape ongoing negotiations, Politico writes.

“Having Trump be distracted was not necessarily a bad thing,” an EU diplomat who, like others in this piece, was granted anonymity because they weren’t allowed to comment publicly, told Politico.

Behind the scenes, officials fear that renewed U.S. engagement could sideline European efforts to maintain pressure on Russia while continuing robust support for Ukraine.

The European Union is preparing a 21st package of sanctions against Russia in the coming weeks, targeting its so-called “shadow fleet” of oil tankers and aiming to maintain price caps on Russian oil exports.

However, there are concerns in Brussels that Washington is unlikely to mirror these measures, particularly as U.S. policy has shown signs of easing energy-related sanctions amid rising global prices.

The G7 summit is taking place from June 15–17 at the Alpine resort of G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, France. European leaders are reportedly seeking to manage relations carefully with Trump during the meeting.

French President Emmanuel Macron is working to ensure Trump remains engaged throughout the summit and does not depart early. As part of those efforts, Macron is organizing a gala reception for the U.S. president at the Palace of Versailles following the summit’s conclusion on June 17.

The summit is expected to focus heavily on Ukraine, sanctions policy, and coordination among Western allies amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
