Pope criticises “handful of tyrants” for plundering planet
Pope Leo XIV has sharply criticised global political leaders, accusing some of exploiting religion for personal and strategic gain and warning that a “handful of tyrants” is ravaging the world.
The pontiff made the remarks during a visit to Cameroon, where he also addressed the misuse of religion in political, military, and economic pursuits. His comments come amid tensions with Washington over his criticism of the US operation in Iran.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, but woe to those who manipulate religion in the very name of God for their own military, economic, or political gain, dragging that which is sacred into darkness and filth,” the pope said during a speech broadcast by DRM News.
According to the pontiff, while the world is held together by a “multitude of supportive brothers and sisters,” it continues to be exploited by a small group of powerful actors.
“Peace is not something we must invent. It is something we must embrace by accepting our neighbor as our brother and as our sister,” Pope Leo XIV added.
