17 July 2026 19:40
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 in magnitude struck off the coast of Mexico's southern state of Chiapas on Friday, prompting a tsunami warning and sending tremors across neighbouring Guatemala and El Salvador, according to Reuters.
Authorities in the affected countries reported no immediate damage or casualties following the quake.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake occurred near the Mexican town of Puerto Madero at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles).
The tsunami threat warning was issued shortly after the tremor, as officials continued to assess the situation and monitor potential impacts along the Pacific coastline.
