Powerful typhoon forces evacuation of one million people in China

A powerful typhoon has struck China, prompting the evacuation of more than one million people.

The storm, Typhoon Dolphin, led to the cancellation of more than 1,000 flights, the evacuation of around one million people, and the declaration of the highest-level emergency, Caliber.Az reports via Euronews.

In Wenzhou, authorities evacuated more than 900,000 residents and opened more than 1,000 temporary shelters. In addition, around 1,400 flights were cancelled at Shanghai’s two main airports, while another 270 flights were cancelled at Hangzhou Airport.

According to China’s National Meteorological Administration, the typhoon made landfall near the city of Yuhuan in Zhejiang province at around 5:30 p.m. local time. Wind speeds near the cyclone’s centre exceeded 150 kilometres per hour when it reached land. Rainfall of 250–500 millimetres is expected in central and eastern Zhejiang province.
