President-designate: Major steps completed for upcoming COP29 conference

Mukhtar Babayev, who serves as both the President-designate of COP29 and Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, announced that substantial preparations have been completed for the forthcoming COP29 conference scheduled to take place in Baku this November. 

He conveyed this update during the inauguration of the “Uniform Accreditation and Issuance Center” (UDAC), Caliber.Az reports.

Babayev indicated that efforts are still ongoing to finalize the venue for the event.

As of the morning of October 18, the COP29 Operating Company reported an impressive registration tally of 28,000 participants for the climate conference. Narmin Jarchalova, who chairs the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company and holds the position of Chief Operating Officer for COP29, emphasized that among the registrants, roughly 2,700 are representatives from the media.

The remaining attendees will consist of members from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), delegates from observer organizations, official government delegations, and various other stakeholders engaged in climate issues.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is set to take place in Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22. This decision was made during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Over the span of two weeks, Baku is expected to welcome approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, with the goal of preventing harmful human impacts on the climate system. The acronym COP stands for "Conference of the Parties," which designates the highest decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC.
