President: Leaders of EU member states fail to reach agreement on sending troops to Ukraine

21 February 2025 09:15

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has said that the leaders of the EU member states have not reached a decision on deploying troops to Ukraine.

President Nausėda made these remarks during a press conference, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

While discussing potential military involvement in Ukraine, Nausėda clarified that the EU had approved the presence of military instructors in the country, but no agreement was made regarding the broader deployment of troops for operational missions.

"We have already discussed the presence of instructors in Ukraine, and that issue was positively addressed," Nausėda explained. "However, no decision has been made yet on deploying troops for more extensive operations."

The Lithuanian leader further detailed that his country’s government is in consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense on the matter.

He emphasized that before any deployment decisions could be made, the key question would be determining "under what conditions and at what stage these peacekeepers could be deployed" to Ukraine.

Nausėda also pointed out that while the topic was discussed at the summit, there could be various formats for the potential presence of EU troops in Ukraine, depending on the evolving situation. This development highlights the ongoing complexity and sensitivity of EU decision-making regarding military support for Ukraine, as the conflict in the region continues evolving.
