President Sandu honors EU’s former high rep with Moldova's highest state award
President of Moldova Maia Sandu has awarded EU's former High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell with the highest state honor – the Order of the Republic.
The corresponding decree was published on the president's official website, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
"EU's former High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has been awarded with the Order of the Republic for consistent support for the Republic of Moldova's European path and efforts to strengthen national security, as well as for advancing Moldova's interests within European institutions," the document states.
Kaja Kallas, the former Prime Minister of Estonia, has assumed the role of High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, following the EU's regular five-year leadership transition. Kallas succeeded Josep Borrell, who had held the position since 2019 and was known for his outspoken criticism of Israel. To take up her new role, Kallas stepped down from her position as Estonia's prime minister.
