President Sheinbaum announces temporary halt to US tariffs on Mexican imports

07 March 2025 09:46

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that US tariffs on Mexican goods covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will be suspended until April 2, following a phone talk with US President Donald Trump.

Sheinbaum assured that Mexico will not be required to pay tariffs on goods falling under the trade agreement between the US, Mexico, and Canada, emphasising that the suspension will remain in effect until the specified date, Caliber.Az reports, citing President Sheinbaum’s message on X.

The Mexican president stated in her post that the agreement would remain in place until April 2, when the US would announce the implementation of reciprocal tariffs for all countries.

President Trump granted temporary tariff exemptions for Canadian and Mexican goods covered by the North American trade agreement known as USMCA until April 2. About 50 per cent of Mexican imports and 38 per cent of Canadian imports are covered by the trade agreement, according to a White House official. Trump is poised to enact “reciprocal tariffs” April 2 on foreign nations that have import taxes on US goods. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico should be spared when such reciprocal tariffs come into effect. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his goal remains to get “all tariffs removed.” The recent tariff exceptions excluded those imposed on China. The country is standing tough, saying it’s prepared to fight “any type of war” with the US.
