Protests erupt in Mississippi after death of one-year-old child

Protests have broken out in the city of Senatobia in the US state of Mississippi after police shot a one-year-old child outside a local supermarket late last week, ABC News reports.

The broadcaster said law enforcement used tear gas during clashes with demonstrators; however, there were no immediate reports of injuries, fatalities, or arrests linked to the protests, Caliber.Az reports, citing ABC News.

The incident reportedly occurred on June 14 after police responded to a report of theft at a Walmart store.

Officers observed two individuals with a child allegedly fleeing the store after the theft.

Police said they attempted to stop the vehicle the suspects entered.

Authorities stated that after the driver nearly struck an officer, police opened fire on the vehicle.

The suspects later arrived at a hospital, where doctors confirmed the death of the infant and reported serious injuries to one of the adults.

An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing.
