Rally in Crete protests at US military's behaviour on island
The Peace Committee of Chania on Crete held a rally against the indecent behavior of the military from the US aircraft carrier George W. Bush, which entered the US base in Souda Bay on the island.
The committee was said to hold a protest outside the city hall to condemn the "unacceptable" behaviour of US and NATO sailors from the crew of the aircraft carrier George W. Bush, which caused "a series of incidents in Chania" on March 11, according to local news portal Flashnews.gr.
At the demand of the gathering, the mayor came out to them and was handed a protest resolution. At the meeting that followed, Manolis Papadomanolakis, chairman of the Chania Peace Committee, demanded that the city authorities respond promptly to the "drunken antics" of the US military.
In photos published by the portal, protesters outside City Hall hold banners with slogans such as "NATO, away from the Aegean Sea", "American butchers are undesirable in our city", "Close the Suda base immediately", "We want Suda to be a port of peoples", "No spending on NATO, money for building schools and houses for workers".
Crete is home to the largest US naval base in the Mediterranean Sea. As the Greek leftist news portal 902.gr reported earlier on March 11, the Chania Peace Committee called on residents to come to protest at City Hall, noting that 6,000 sailors and military personnel from the aircraft carrier George W. Bush had once again arrived at the naval base in Souda to rest at a time when all of Greece is mourning the dozens killed in the train accident. The organization claimed "drunken antics" in the town by US soldiers, some of whom "gave themselves jabs", in addition, according to the committee, there were fights between US military personnel.
