Reuters: China deploys over 100 intercontinental missiles near Mongolia border

23 December 2025 00:15

China has deployed more than 100 intercontinental ballistic missiles near its border with Mongolia, according to a draft Pentagon report, which underscored Beijing’s expanding military ambitions.

The Pentagon had previously confirmed the existence of missile silos but did not specify how many missiles were loaded, Reuters reports.

The new document states that China has likely placed more than 100 solid-fuel Dongfeng-31 missiles in three silo fields.

The draft Pentagon report did not specify any potential targets for the newly deployed missiles, and US officials said the document could be revised before being submitted to lawmakers.

According to the assessment, China’s nuclear warhead arsenal exceeded 600 units in 2024, with Beijing planning to increase the number to more than 1,000 by 2030.

China is expanding and modernising its weapons stockpile at a pace unmatched by any other nuclear-armed state, while Beijing has dismissed reports of a military buildup as attempts to smear the country and mislead the international community.

Last month, US President Donald Trump said he might be pursuing a plan to denuclearise with China and Russia, but a draft Pentagon report seen by Reuters said Beijing showed no apparent interest in such an initiative.
