Reuters: Trump considers third presidential term

US President Donald Trump has discussed the possibility of running for a third presidential term in conversations with White House staff, amid concerns about becoming a “lame duck” and losing political influence, Reuters reports, citing a former senior administration official.

In US politics, a “lame duck” refers to an elected official whose influence significantly weakens before the official end of their term, remaining in office but facing reduced political support and difficulties in advancing policies.

In a February interview with NBC News, Trump avoided a direct answer when asked whether he planned to remain president beyond his second term.

“I don’t know. That would be interesting,” he said, noting that it would be terrible if he answered.

Trump’s second term is set to end on January 20, 2029.

Under the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, a president cannot be elected more than twice.

Changing this rule would require approval by two-thirds of both houses of Congress and ratification by at least 38 states, or a constitutional convention initiated by two-thirds of the states.
