Reuters: US intelligence sees Iran’s leadership intact despite war

12 March 2026 10:02

US intelligence assessments indicate that Iran’s leadership structure remains largely intact and is not currently at risk of collapse despite nearly two weeks of sustained bombardment by the United States and Israel, according to sources cited by Reuters.

One source familiar with the intelligence said a “multitude” of reports provide a “consistent analysis that the regime is not in danger” of collapsing and that it continues to “retain control of the Iranian public.” The source added that the most recent intelligence assessment was completed within the past few days.

The findings come at a time when political pressure is increasing amid rising global oil prices and after US President Donald Trump suggested the war could end “soon.”

According to the intelligence assessments, Iran’s clerical leadership has remained cohesive despite the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28 during the opening wave of the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran.

Israeli officials have privately expressed similar doubts about the potential outcomes of the conflict. A senior Israeli official told Reuters that there is no certainty the war will ultimately lead to the collapse of Iran’s clerical government.

Sources cautioned that the situation remains fluid and could shift depending on developments inside Iran.

Since the war began, the United States and Israel have targeted Iranian air defense systems, nuclear facilities and senior officials. In addition to Khamenei, the strikes have killed dozens of senior figures and commanders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Despite those losses, intelligence assessments indicate that the IRGC and interim leadership structures continue to maintain control over the country.

Earlier this week, the Assembly of Experts declared Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the slain supreme leader, as Iran’s new leader.
