US revolutionary brain chip lets person control computers with thoughts

25 March 2025 00:07

In a recent article, BBC highlights that in a groundbreaking development that once seemed like science fiction, Noland Arbaugh, 30, became the first person to receive a brain chip capable of translating thoughts into computer commands.

This marks a monumental step in neurotechnology, with the chip implanted by Neuralink, the US company co-founded by Elon Musk.

Noland, who was paralyzed in a diving accident in 2016, underwent the procedure in January 2024, eight years after his injury. The technology behind the chip is known as a brain-computer interface (BCI), which detects the small electrical impulses generated when a person thinks about moving and converts them into digital commands, such as controlling a computer cursor.

While Noland’s case is particularly notable due to Musk's involvement, he insists that the focus should be on the technology itself. "Good or bad, whatever may be, I would be helping," Noland said, acknowledging the risks involved in the procedure. "If something terrible happened, I knew they would learn from it."

Before the surgery, Noland feared that his severe injuries would prevent him from ever working, studying, or enjoying activities like gaming. "You just have no control, no privacy, and it's hard," he said, reflecting on his struggle after the accident. "You have to learn that you have to rely on other people for everything."

The implant, which aims to restore some independence by enabling Noland to control a computer using only his mind, is part of the rapidly advancing field of BCIs. Neuralink's chip represents a significant milestone, though experts warn that it is still too early to fully assess the long-term implications of the procedure.

Despite concerns over the invasiveness of the implant, Musk’s involvement has helped Neuralink attract substantial investment, but it has also sparked debate over its safety. Noland, however, remains focused on the potential benefits of the technology and emphasizes that Neuralink is more than just a product of Musk’s influence.

As Noland adapts to his new device, there is no doubt about its profound impact on his life, offering a glimpse into the future of medical technology and the possibilities it may unlock for those with disabilities.
