Romania expands nuclear reach with Feldioara fuel export to Argentina
The uranium concentrate processing plant in Feldioara, central Romania, will supply nuclear fuel to Argentina for the first time.
Cosmin Gîţă, CEO of Nuclearelectrica, noted that supplying nuclear material for the first time to another country operating PHWR (pressurised heavy water reactors) is a source of pride and an achievement for the company and its uranium concentrate processing subsidiary in Feldioara.
Agafiel Mărăcinianu, CEO of the Feldioara-based firm, in turn, emphasised that the company is ready to develop and expand its supply network and offer Romania’s nuclear fuel sector a new dimension — an international one.
The plant, which converts uranium octoxide into dioxide for subsequent export to other countries, began operations in 2022.
The fuel supplied to Argentina will suffice for one year, and previously, Romania had supplied Argentina with heavy water.
