Romania’s president says Moldova union not imminent
Romanian President Nicuşor Dan has said that a potential union between Romania and the Republic of Moldova could only take place if a majority of Moldovans supported it, adding that “for the moment, we are not there”.
Speaking to reporters as he arrived at an informal meeting of the European Council, Dan was asked whether Romania was ready to seriously consider the scenario of unification with its eastern neighbour, Caliber.Az reports per Romanian media.
“That would be possible when a majority in the Republic of Moldova wants it. For the moment, we are not there,” the president said.
The issue has gained renewed attention amid heightened regional tensions and the broader security situation in Eastern Europe.
Earlier on January 22, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that unification with Romania could be one way to ensure that Moldova remains part of the “free world” and lives in peace, given the current regional and international context.
However, speaking at her first major press conference of the year, Sandu stressed that she had not discussed the issue of unification with European leaders. She reiterated that Moldova’s priority remains accession to the European Union.
She also acknowledged that there is currently no majority public support for unification among Moldovan voters.
