Romania's top court rejects request to cancel presidential election

22 May 2025 13:16

Romania's Constitutional Court has unanimously dismissed a request to cancel the presidential election held on May 18, which was won by centrist independent Nicusor Dan, the mayor of Bucharest.

The court, in a statement released on May 22, deemed the request "unfounded" and upheld the election results, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

The petition was filed by George Simion, the leader of Romania’s far-right Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR), who alleged that the election had been influenced by foreign interference, specifically from France and Moldova. Simion's claims of electoral manipulation were not substantiated by the court, which found no evidence to support his accusations.

Independent observers, who monitored the election, have affirmed that the vote was well-organized and conducted fairly. With the court's ruling, the election results will be officially validated later today, with Nicusor Dan present to receive the confirmation of his victory.

The court’s decision ensures that Dan's presidency will proceed without legal challenge, solidifying his mandate following his win in the May 18 election.
