Romania sinks barges to increase water flow to Cernavodă nuclear plant
09 August 2026 10:45
An operation to sink four barges in the Danube River to increase the flow of water reaching the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant has been completed, Romania’s National Administration “Apele Române” reported.
According to the agency, the barges were sunk in a controlled manner and will serve as two artificial weirs, redirecting part of the flow into the Old Danube, through which water reaches the power plant.
The first results of the operation are expected by the evening of the following day and throughout August 10.
The works were postponed several times due to strong currents. Two barges were sunk on August 7 and another two on August 8. Experts expect the water level near the nuclear power plant to rise by 2–4 centimeters.
