Romanian airspace sees another drone shot down by Spanish F-18

Another incursion by a drone into Romanian airspace was brought to an end when an F-18 fighter jet operated by the Spanish Air Force and stationed in Romania shot it down, the country’s Defense Ministry announced.

“At 04:44 on the night of August 15-16, the surveillance systems of the Ministry of National Defense detected an aerial object entering national airspace from the direction of the Republic of Moldova, approximately 24 kilometers north of Galati. An F-18 fighter jet of the Spanish Air Force, carrying out target surveillance missions from the Mihail Kogălniceanu 57th Air Base, tracked the target by radar and received authorization to engage it,” the ministry said in a statement.

The drone was shot down at 05:01 local time. Its debris fell between the settlements of Băleni and Cudalbi in Galati County, in an uninhabited area.

The Defense Ministry added that it would provide further details on the incident as they become available.
