Romanian president calls for faster implementation of decision on NATO reinforcement in Eastern Europe
Romanian President Claus Iohannis said the NATO strategy for increasing the Alliance's presence in Eastern Europe should be speeded up.
According to Gazeta.ru, he made the statement to journalists after meeting with the Secretary General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg.
The Romanian leader said he and Stoltenberg assessed the security situation in the Euro-Atlantic area on November 28.
"In my conversations with Mr. Secretary General (of NATO), I stressed the need to implement as quickly as possible the decisions taken at the historic summit in Madrid this year," Johannis said.
During the meeting, the Romanian president also thanked the alliance secretary general for his efforts "to coordinate NATO's modernisation" and noted the need for a stronger deterrence force on the eastern flank.
According to him, the implementation of the previously adopted NATO Strategic Concept will increase the Alliance's role in the region, "on which not only the security of the Euro-Atlantic area but also the stability of the international order depends".
