Romanian president chooses Ilie Bolojan to lead new government

20 June 2025 17:34

Romanian President Nicușor Dan officially appointed Ilie Bolojan as the country’s prime minister during a press briefing on June 20 at Cotroceni Palace, following their discussions.

“I am appointing Mr. Ilie Bolojan as prime minister. I want to thank the political parties willing to form a parliamentary majority. It is in Romania’s interest that the new government has the support of political forces,” President Dan stated, Caliber.Az reports, referencing foreign media.

Bolojan acknowledged the gravity of the responsibility entrusted to him, particularly given Romania’s challenging financial situation.

“Starting today, I will continue negotiations with political forces to establish a parliamentary majority, approve the government’s composition, and finalise its programme. My primary goals are to restore public finances, ensure effective governance, and regain the trust of Romanians through actions worthy of respect,” he emphasised.

Bolojan’s appointment was anticipated, as during the election campaign, President Dan repeatedly identified him as the most suitable candidate for prime minister. However, the two later diverged on the issue of a potential VAT increase, which the president opposed.

Despite these disagreements, President Dan expressed his continued support: “Mr. Ilie Bolojan is the best candidate to implement necessary reforms in the state apparatus. He has demonstrated his ability to optimise spending and holds a strategic vision for development. I will be his partner throughout this process,” the president affirmed.

This appointment and the formation of a new government represent a significant challenge for the newly elected president, especially since the Social Democratic Party (PSD) has exited the ruling coalition.

Parliament is expected to vote on the new cabinet’s composition and programme on Monday, June 23. The cabinet members are set to be sworn in on the same day by the president, who will then attend the NATO summit in The Hague on June 24.
