Romanian president declares Russian consul persona non grata
The Russian Federation’s Consulate General in Constanța will be closed, and the Russian consul has been declared persona non grata following a drone incident in Galați.
According to HotNews, this was announced by Romanian President Nicușor Dan at a press conference following a meeting of the country’s Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT).
He said the incident occurred after a Russian “Geran-2” drone deviated from its route, crossed into Romanian territory, and struck a residential building in the city of Galați, injuring two people.
The president stressed that “full responsibility lies with Russia” and announced a series of measures in response.
“The Consul General of the Russian Federation in Constanța has been declared persona non grata, and the Russian Consulate General in Constanța will be closed,” Nicușor Dan stated.
He also said Romania will strengthen its defence capabilities under the SAFE programme, particularly in air defence. According to him, relevant contracts will be signed in the coming days, with deliveries expected within one to two years.
The head of state added that civil protection services responded promptly, and the Interior Ministry quickly took measures to ensure security in the area, including reinforcing law enforcement presence.
