Royal Thai air force implements energy-saving measures

09 March 2026 14:05

The Royal Thai Air Force announced on March 9 that it will tighten fuel and energy use in response to the ongoing Middle East war and rising oil prices, while continuing essential missions and maintaining defence readiness.

The move follows directives from Defence Minister Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit for agencies under the ministry to adopt energy-saving measures. The Air Force operates under the command of Air Chief Marshal Sakesan Kantha, the Nation reports.

Speaking at Wing 6, Air Chief Marshal Prapas Sornchaidee, assistant commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Air Force, outlined the force’s approach: “Ground fuel use for support functions would be handled sparingly and only when necessary, while missions tied directly to operations and national security would continue in full.”

He added that aviation fuel has been reserved for two key purposes: normal flying operations, including ongoing pilot training, and war reserves for emergency use.

“Operational readiness remains the priority,” Prapas said, assuring the public that the Air Force would manage fuel supplies carefully and maintain sufficient reserves for national defence.

He urged both personnel and the public to recognise that the Middle East conflict is impacting Thailand, despite the country’s expanded oil procurement from alternative sources.

He also cautioned against misinformation: “People should rely on information from official agencies and avoid overreacting to dramatic images online,” noting that some content circulating during the crisis could be AI-generated or misleading.

Prapas confirmed that the multinational Cope Tiger 2026 exercise, scheduled for March 15-27, 2026, will proceed as planned with participation from the United States Air Force and the Republic of Singapore Air Force under the theme “Together We Fly, Stronger We Stand.”
