Rubio questions NATO's role, citing allied restrictions during Iran war “What is the purpose of the alliance?”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the actions of some NATO allies raise questions about the alliance’s purpose during an interview with Fox News.
As an example, he pointed to countries that refused to provide the United States with military bases for strikes against Iran.
“So, when you have NATO partners denying you the use of those bases, when the primary reason why NATO is good for America is now being denied to us by Spain, as an example. Then what is the purpose of the alliance? It starts becoming, you know, they are allies when they want to be,” Rubio added.
US President Donald Trump has stated that he is seriously considering withdrawing the United States from NATO following allies’ refusal to provide military bases. He also said that the alliance’s credibility has been significantly damaged due to its unwillingness to assist the United States in reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
