Russia'a latest attack used 40 drones, majority shot down

17 October 2022 15:20

The Russian army has used over 40 Iranian kamikaze drones on Ukraine during a string of attacks carried out on October 17.

The Interior Minister, Denys Monastyrsky, and the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, Yuriy Ignat, spoke during a TV-marathon event where they confirmed that the majority of those drones have been shot down, the Ukrainian RBK reports.

“The drones ascended not only on Kyiv but also on the Sumy and Dnepropetrov regions. In total, 46 drones have attacked Ukraine in the morning today, out of which 36 were eliminated, meaning the vast majority targeting our state”, the minister said.

As per Monastyrsky, Russia has sent 30 drones only to attack the capital Kyiv, with 25 having been brought down.

“This is a very high number. The goal of a massive attack was not reached today. I believe that they wanted today’s offensive to surpass last Monday’s one with missile attacks”, he added.

The speaker for the Air Force stated that, in fact, 43 drones were used in the offensive and he appealed to the citizens not to interfere with the work of the army and not to attempt shooting drones by themselves.

“All drones were approaching from the South, 43 in total. 37 were destroyed. The armed forces made use of aviation, air defence systems and other weapons. At least 86% of the downed drones were [Iranian-manufactured] ‘Shaheds’. Not a bad result. Let the soldiers do their work, there is no need to throw anything from the windows”, Ignat said.

So far, 3 deaths have been reported as a result of Russia’s attack on Kyiv on October 17.

Attacks on critical infrastructure objects in the Sumy region have also been recorded, with several killed and injured.
