Russia offers to facilitate US-Iran dialogue on nuclear, regional issues

04 March 2025 19:21

Russia has agreed to support the Trump administration in engaging with Iran over its nuclear programme and regional activities.

In February, President Trump communicated his interest directly to President Putin, and US officials later discussed the issue with their Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia, Caliber.Az reports, citing Bloomberg.

The White House has not yet commented, and both Russia and Iran have refrained from publicly confirming the request.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirmed that Russia believes the US and Iran should resolve differences through negotiations and is prepared to facilitate this process. An Iranian foreign ministry spokesman stated that it is “natural” for countries to offer assistance in such matters.

Since taking office, Trump has sought to re-establish relations with Russia, particularly with regard to the ongoing war in Ukraine and other geopolitical concerns. However, it remains uncertain how receptive Tehran would be to US overtures, especially given strong opposition within Iran from hardliners, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, who has consistently rejected engagement with Washington.

Both the US and Iran are seeking ways to establish dialogue, with a potential agreement likely involving sanctions relief and Iran curbing its regional influence. Despite this, tensions remain high, with Iran’s nuclear activities and its continued support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah remaining key points of contention.
