Russia opposes military presence of external powers in Central Asia DEFENCE CHIEF WARNS
Russia considers the military presence of extra-regional forces in Central Asia unacceptable, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov has stated.
At a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) defence chiefs in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, he said Moscow is closely monitoring attempts by third countries to establish a foothold in the region, Caliber.Az reports, citing the ministry.
The minister added that Afghanistan remains the main source of instability, with threats of terrorism and transnational crime emanating from the country.
During SCO meetings, defence ministers discussed key issues of international and regional security, as well as prospects for further cooperation between defence agencies.
Agreements were signed following the meetings.
The group includes Russia, Belarus, China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, India, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as Iran and Pakistan.
