Russia revokes citizenship of nearly 800 individuals under new law
In a sweeping enforcement of its revised citizenship laws, Russia has stripped 791 individuals of their Russian citizenship over the past six months, official data by the Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed.
The revocations come in the wake of a significant legislative shift that took effect on October 26, 2023, when the new federal law "On Citizenship of the Russian Federation" introduced expanded grounds for terminating previously acquired citizenship, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Under Part 1 of Article 24 of the statute, Russian citizenship obtained through naturalization may be revoked if the individual is convicted of crimes listed under 64 specific articles of the Criminal Code. These crimes span a broad range of serious offenses, including acts related to terrorism, extremism, treason, and other threats to national security.
