Russia strikes Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, causing power outages

05 October 2025 15:14

On the night of October 4 to 5, the Russian Federation launched strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure facilities.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy said in a statement that equipment belonging to Zaporizhzhiaoblenergo was damaged as a result of the attack, leaving residents of the regional centre and the Zaporizhzhia district without electricity, Caliber.Az reports.

Sumy faced similar disruptions, including a drone strike on a passenger train in Shostka that killed one and injured at least 30, alongside power cuts affecting 38 settlements. On X, users shared footage of smoke rising from strike sites in Lviv and Sumy, with one post lamenting, "Lights out in Shostka and 38 settlements—Russia's winter war plan in action."

In Chernihiv, a fresh wave of attacks prompted renewed blackouts.

“The enemy has once again attacked the Chernihiv region. Hourly power outage schedules remain in effect here. Energy workers are working to reduce restrictions. Emergency repair and restoration efforts are underway to restore the electricity supply as quickly as possible,” the ministry said.
