Russian envoy: Finland to receive nuclear-capable fighter jets in 2026
Finland is set to receive F-35 fighter jets in 2026, which are capable of carrying nuclear weapons. However, there is no indication yet that the Finnish Air Force plans to equip these jets with such capabilities.
Russian Ambassador to Finland, Pavel Kuznetsov, made the statement, highlighting the technical ability of the F-35s to carry nuclear payloads, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
He emphasized that while the jets have this capability, any decision to equip them with nuclear weapons would require significant political decisions both from Helsinki and NATO's leadership.
"It is important to remember that, from a technical standpoint, the F-35s are capable of carrying nuclear weapons," Kuznetsov said.
He added that the issue should not be overlooked as Finland develops its air force capabilities, noting, "We cannot disregard this aspect as we monitor the development plans of Finland's air force."
Earlier, Kuznetsov also revealed that a multinational NATO forward presence tactical group would be stationed in northern Finland under Swedish leadership.
Furthermore, a NATO regional land forces command headquarters will be established in the eastern Finnish city of Mikkeli.
