Russian, US top diplomats set for possible face-to-face at UN session
On the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly session in New York, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is anticipated to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, marking their first potential encounter in nearly three years.
This development was disclosed by Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
"It is expected to be the first meeting [of Lavrov] with the US Secretary of State, probably since 2021," Nebenzya stated, highlighting the significance of this diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also underlined the possibility of a meeting between Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the 80th UN General Assembly session in New York.
Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Lavrov as head of Moscow’s delegation to the UN gathering. The General Debate will take place on September 23-27, and September 29.
The US, under President Donald Trump, has led efforts to end the more than three-year-long war between Russia and Ukraine.
