Sanctions lifting experts join third round of Iran-US indirect nuclear talks in Oman
The third round of indirect nuclear talks between Iran and the United States is set to commence in Muscat, Oman, with a crucial focus on sanctions relief as part of the broader discussions.
Scheduled for April 26, the talks will include experts on lifting sanctions alongside senior negotiators from both Tehran and Washington. This round follows two earlier rounds mediated by Oman, one in Muscat and the other in Rome, Caliber.Az reports citing Iranian media.
Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, representing Iran, arrived in Muscat on April 25 evening, with the American delegation arriving on April 26 morning. Araghchi met with Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi twice ahead of the talks to finalize logistical and procedural arrangements. According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baqaei, the Iranian delegation will carefully calibrate its steps based on previous experiences and the actions of the US during the talks.
Iran’s stance on the negotiations remains firm, with the country emphasizing that progress depends on the "goodwill, seriousness, and realism" demonstrated by the US. Baqaei reiterated Iran’s commitment to securing its “legitimate and lawful right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes,” while also stressing the urgency of addressing the “unlawful and inhumane” sanctions imposed on the country.
In line with these objectives, a key element of the ongoing discussions will revolve around lifting sanctions that have severely impacted Iran’s economy and nuclear program. Experts on sanctions relief will play an integral role in this round of talks, as both sides seek to negotiate the terms under which these measures could be eased in exchange for Iran's commitment to a peaceful nuclear program.
The third round follows a series of talks that began with an initial meeting on April 12 in Muscat between Araghchi and Steve Witkoff, the US president’s envoy for the Middle East. The second round, held in Rome on April 19, continued the dialogue with hopes of bridging gaps and finding common ground on the nuclear issue.
As the talks are set to begin at noon on April 26, all eyes will be on how serious and prepared the US is to reach a fair and realistic agreement with Iran.
