São Tomé and Principe's president dissolves government due to premier's absenteeism

08 January 2025 11:10

São Tomé and Principe's President Carlos Vila Nova dismissed Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada's government on January 7, according to a presidential decree.

The decree instructed Trovoada's party to nominate a new prime minister and head of government within 72 hours, Caliber.Az reports via Chinese media.

The presidential decree criticized the government's "significant ineffectiveness" under Trovoada's leadership, highlighting the prime minister's "frequent and prolonged absences" from the country, which it said did not benefit the state or its citizens, but instead led to unnecessary public expenditures.

Additionally, the decree pointed out the prime minister's lack of "strategic cooperation" and evident "institutional disloyalty," factors that have impeded the relationship between the president and the government, especially through the prime minister.

Tensions between the president and prime minister, both from the Independent Democratic Action Party (ADI), escalated late last year when the government approved an airport tax hike via a resolution, despite a political veto from the president, who pledged to reverse the decision.

According to STP-Press, under Sao Tome and Principe's Constitution, if the ADI nominates Trovoada again, the president may invite the second-largest party to form a government. If that party fails to secure a parliamentary majority, the president can call for legislative elections within three months.
