Zelenskyy: EU membership part of Ukraine’s security guarantees
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the possibility of accelerated EU accession for his country, as outlined in the latest draft US peace proposal, saying EU membership is part of Ukraine’s security guarantees.
During a press conference in Brussels, he stated that fast-tracking Ukraine’s EU membership depends on Ukraine’s actions and the actions of its partners, provided they are not politically blocked, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“If it is blocked politically, I don’t understand that logic, but I understand who is doing it. For us, membership in the European Union is part of the security guarantees Ukraine is negotiating for and counting on,” Zelenskyy added.
The president noted that the accession date is an important issue but emphasised that “this will be decided by EU leaders.”
Zelenskyy stressed that decisions should not be influenced by others, including Russia or those who politically block Ukraine. “Even some EU members, as you know, block it for political reasons, not because a particular reform has not been implemented in Ukraine,” he said.
According to the Financial Times, the latest draft peace proposal under discussion by US and Ukrainian officials with Brussels’ support envisages Ukraine joining the EU by January 1, 2027.
