Saudi Arabia becomes more accessible for female travelers

Historically, the Kingdom's conservative culture and restrictions on women, such as the ban on female drivers, made it difficult for women to visit or travel freely within the country. However, a series of reforms have transformed the travel landscape for women, especially solo travelers.

Since June 2018, women in Saudi Arabia have been allowed to drive, and the introduction of e-visas for international travelers has made visiting the country more straightforward. Female tourists no longer need a male companion, and the dress code has been relaxed—modesty is still expected, but there is no requirement to cover the hair or wear restrictive clothing.

Female travelers are increasingly visible in public-facing roles in the Kingdom. From tour guides to drivers and scuba diving instructors, women are now taking on jobs traditionally dominated by men. For those seeking an all-female experience, many tour operators now offer women-only tours, with female guides ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey. Nourah Bassam Al-Meaiweed, a female tour guide with Fokharia Luxury Tours, emphasized, “We are committed to providing exceptional tourism experiences for women.”

Despite these positive changes, experts advise caution when traveling, particularly in more rural areas. Nicole Brewer, a content creator who visited Jeddah and AlUla in 2023, said, “We both felt safe there... I would travel to Saudi again and wouldn’t have a problem going solo next time.”

Overall, Saudi Arabia is becoming a more inviting destination for female travelers, offering both safety and a glimpse into a rapidly evolving society. As long as travelers respect local customs, they can expect a welcoming experience in this fascinating and transforming nation.
