Security fears force Austrian chancellor to scrap Israel trip again
Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker has canceled his planned visit to Israel next week, marking the second time this year that a scheduled trip has been called off amid heightened regional tensions, Ynet reports.
According to reports, the official reason for the cancellation is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned visit to the United States. However, security concerns over the potential escalation of the confrontation with Iran also played a significant role in the decision.
The visit, which would have been Stocker's first official trip to Israel as chancellor, was expected to include high-level meetings with Israeli officials. Austrian sources cited the deteriorating regional security environment and fears of further escalation as the primary reasons for the last-minute cancellation.
Israeli officials expressed disappointment over the decision while acknowledging the security challenges facing visiting foreign leaders.
"We respect the Chancellor's decision and hope to reschedule the visit when the situation allows," a senior diplomatic source said.
The cancellation comes amid heightened regional tensions, with the United States reinforcing its military presence in the region, including the deployment of aerial refueling tankers to Israel, while Iran continues to issue threats of retaliation.
Several European leaders have also adjusted or postponed travel plans to the Middle East in recent days, reflecting growing caution among European governments over the volatile security situation.
